Abstract

Big data analytics and applications are fundamentally dependent on the availability of vast amounts of data to extract valuable insights and drive innovation. Analytical applications can be categorized into three distinct groups, each characterized by its unique data characteristics: spatial, spatiotemporal, and social. These categories pose unique challenges, from the management of large-scale geographic data in spatial applications to handling large volumes of communication records in telco scenarios, and social data's complexities in capturing human interactions.

In this talk the speaker will present how big data analytics and innovative applications can be supported and enhanced through novel algorithms and indexing structures. Particularly, examples will be provided from each category, discussing innovative methods to address the big data challenges in terms of query response time and storage efficiency. Finally, the speaker will conclude the presentation discussing the future implementations and potential directions.

About the Speaker

constantinos costaDr. Constantinos Costa (H-index: 11) is a visiting assistant professor at the University of Cyprus. He is also a co-founder and CEO of Rinnoco Ltd, a research, innovation, and education consulting startup company founded in 2021. Before founding Rinnoco, he was a visiting research assistant professor at University of Pittsburgh and a research associate in the Advanced Data Management Technologies laboratory at the School of Computing and Information of the University of Pittsburgh.

He has significant experience in data management (databases, spatial big data, spatio-temporal datasets, NoSQL), distributed, cloud & high-performance computing. Over the last ten years, he has developed novel software stacks and services for industrial projects in collaboration with the various companies and organizations, namely, Appcampus (Finland), Cywee (Taiwan), MTN Telco (Cyprus), Geomatics (Cyprus), and Nicosia General Hospital (Cyprus). He has also contributed extensively to the open-source project Anyplace, for indoor navigation and localization, which led to new collaborations with the industry.

His publication record includes 5 journals and 31 conference and workshop publications. He was leading the ADMT’s CAPRIO and HealthDist projects, which were recognized at IEEE MDM 2021 with the best industrial and application award, as well as the best system demonstration award. During his PhD studies he was a member of the Data Management Systems Laboratory (DMSL) of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus. Because of his academic performance, he was selected to participate to the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (2016), the Onassis Foundation (2017) and the ACM Europe Summer School on Data Science (2018).

About the EuroCC-2 project

EuroCC 2 will work to identify and address the skills gaps in the European High Performance Computing (HPC) ecosystem and coordinate cooperation across Europe to ensure a consistent skills base.

The role of EuroCC 2 is to establish and run a network of more than 30 NCCs across the EuroHPC Participating States. The NCCs act as single points of access in each country between stakeholders and national and EuroHPC systems. They operate on a regional and national level to liaise with local communities, in particular SMEs, map HPC competencies and facilitate access to European HPC resources for users from the private and public sector.

EuroCC 2 delivers training, interacts with industry, develops competence mapping and communication materials and activities, and supports the adoption of HPC services in other related fields, such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), high performance data analytics (HPDA) to expand the HPC user base.

This project has received funding from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 101101903. The JU receives support from the European Union’s programme Digital Europe and Germany, Bulgaria, Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg , Slovakia, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, the Republic of North Macedonia, Iceland, Montenegro and Serbia.
