Another Successful Solar Car Challenge 2016

Another successful Solar Car challenge 2016 organized by The Cyprus Institute in cooperation with the Nicosia Municipality took place in the heart of the capital on Sunday, June 26, 2016.


Official Results Solar Car Challenge 2016:
WINNER: Technical School of Augorou - Famagusta Solar Car Team, with their vehicle “Hyperion 1”
2nd PLACE WINNER: Club RA Belarus, Limassol with their vehicle “First”
3rd PLACE WINNER: Technical School of Augorou - Famagusta Solar Car Team, with their vehicle “Hyperion 2”
Best Design Award: Technical School Ayiou Lazarou, Larnaca – with their vehicle “ERMIS”, designed by the student Christos Ilia
Memorable Awards given to:

      The opening of the 2016 race took place on Saturday, 25 June, with a spectacular parade of the 10 solar vehicles which crossed the Ledra and Onasagorou streets, ending at Freedom Square where the public had the chance to admire these unique cars, designed and built by students of high schools and technical schools that participated in the race.
      The Award Ceremony was held at the Nicosia Town Hall, and the prizes were awarded by the Mayor of Nicosia Constantinos Yiorkadjis, Mayor of Kythrea Dr. Petros Kareklas, and the Vice President of Research of The Cyprus Institute Prof. Euripides Stephanou. The Associate Vice President for Operations, and Secretary of the Board of CyI Trustees, stated that this year’s race was part of a series of events to highlight CyI’s important research work and achievements. The Institute, ten years since its establishment and 8 years since its formal operations commenced has succeeded to be internationally recognised as a regional research and educational resource.
      The Mayor of Nicosia Constantinos Yiorkadjis stressed the big problem of air pollution caused by thousands of cars moving on the streets of Cyprus, emitting harmful pollutants, and added that solar energy represents a long-term, sustainable development and solution for the economy of our country and especially for the transport sector.
      The organization of the Solar Car challenge, shows once again that The Cyprus Institute, is a scientific center of excellence with a strong activity in the solar energy sector in the Eastern Mediterranean region, and continuesto contribute in the development of the energy sector, the environment, Science and Technology, aiming to promote the competitiveness of our country and creating the potential for future direct benefits.
