New Light on Early Works of El Greco

In the crowded with participants Events hall of the Cyprus Institute’s Novel Technologies Building, Dr. Nikolas Bakirtzis and Ropertos Georgiou, from the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC) of The Cyprus Institute, presented results from the recent application of Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) technology on a series of key works from the early years of El Greco’s illustrious career, dating before his departure for Spain in late 1576.

During the lecture, entitled “New Light on Early Works of El Greco”, digital images, visual analysis and video projects of Domenikos Theotokopoulos' works like "the Dormition of the Virgin", "St. Luke painting the Virgin", "Baptism of Christ", and "View of Mount Sinai and the Monastery of St. Catherine" literally lit up subtle details of the art of the great master as well as the preservation condition of these paintings. Attendees marveled at the impressive capabilities of the implementation of RTI photography which can capture the surface texture of the painting panels revealing impressive details of the artist’s painting technique and use of color pigments.
