Solar Car Challenge 2017

Another very successful Solar Car Challenge by The Cyprus Institute!

Congratulations to all the participants for another successful Solar Car challenge organized by The Cyprus Institute in cooperation with the Nicosia Municipality. The race took place in the heart of the capital on Sunday, June 25, 2017.

The participants, for a consecutive 8th year, offered a unique experience to the people who gathered to watch the race, on the streets of Spyrou Kyprianou, Stasikratous, Vasilissis Friderikis, Griva Digeni and Demosthi Severi. The amazing designs presented, offered a one-time experience to spectators, aiming to promote research and innovation in the use of solar energy.

The Award Ceremony was held at the Nicosia Town Hall, and the prizes were awarded by the Mayor of Nicosia Constantinos Yiorkadjis, and Mr. Kyriakos Kokkinos, member of CyI Board of Trustees.

Mr. Kokkinos congratulated the winners and all those who contributed to the success of the race, stressing that the Nicosia Municipality’ s contribution upgraded the level of the event, since for the fourth consecutive year it has been an invaluable supporter of The Cyprus Institute, offering assistance in the planning and execution of the event. Kyriakos Kokkinos also mentioned that the Solar Car Challenge is part of The Cyprus Institute’s effort to encourage young people in such events, opening new horizons for future scientists, promoting their interest in science, technology, development and utilization of alternative energy sources.

The Mayor of Nicosia, Constantinos Yiorkadjis, referred to the importance of supporting this kind of events, so that young people are encouraged to be part of the evolution of use of alternative energy sources in our everyday life. Besides, he pointed out that Cyprus with abundant sunshine throughout the year, has enormous potentials for a widespread use and application of solar energy. Mr. Yiorkadjis concluded by saying that, considering the great success of the Solar Car Challenge 2017, the Nicosia Municipality will continue to strongly support The Cyprus Institute for the coming years.

The Solar Car Challenge 2017, once again shows that The Cyprus Institute, as a scientific center of excellence with a strong activity in the field of solar energy in the Eastern Mediterranean region, continues its action and its development role in the field of Energy Environment, Science and Technology, aiming at promoting the competitiveness of our country and creating the prospects for immediate future solar energy benefits.
