System Application Developer for the LinkSCEEM-2 High-Performance Computing Infrastructure Project

The Cyprus Institute (CyI, www.cyi.ac.cy) is a novel, non-profit research and educational institution, with a scientific and technological orientation, with a regional scope. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC, castorc.cyi.ac.cy) of the CyI, in partnership with the University of Illinois and its National Center for Supercomputing Applications, is developing as an important research resource for CyI, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, acting as a gateway between the EU and the region for advancing computational science and technology.
CaSToRC is currently in the process of implementing the infrastructure project Cy-Tera, which includes a multi-Teraflop High Performance Computing (HPC) facility. CaSToRC is also leading the EU-funded LinkSCEEM-2 project which aims to support the development of a HPC eco-system in the Eastern Mediterranean by interlinking and coordinating regional compute, data and visualization resources to form an integrated e-platform. The Center represents Cyprus within the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) initiative and is a partner to the EU funded PRACE-1IP (First Implementation Phase) project.

Position Description:

CaSToRC is looking for an experienced HPC system application developer, who will be actively engaged in the development of the software environment integrating the computational, data and visualization resources of the Center and of select partners within the framework of the LinkSCEEM-2 FP7 project. The successful candidate may also be involved in maintaining the integrated software platform as well as in training and supporting users in effectively utilizing it.

Profile

The position has the following requirements:
•    MSc in Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, or Engineering  (PhD preferred)
•    Experience in the development of parallel and distributed applications
•    Experience in programming with Fortran or C and scripting languages  
•    Knowledge of data management techniques and methods
•    Analytical problem solving ability
•    Good communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills

Additional, preferred skills include:
•    Experience in scientific workflow design and implementation, and web-application development
•    Experience in the development of data-intensive applications
•    A good understanding of high performance computing and data repository architectures

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will work within the cyber-environments division of the CaSToRC. She/he will be primarily engaged in:
•    Implementing and maintaining a data management software environment integrating distributed data storage systems
•    Implementing and deploying a web-based scientific workflow system integrating distributed compute, data and visualization resources
•    Managing access of users to the integrated scientific workflow platform and monitoring usage
•    Work with users to ensure their scientific applications execute efficiently and utilize the integrated scientific workflow platform to advance their scientific work.
•    Providing answers to user inquiries concerning the integrated platform software and applications
•    Developing and maintaining good working relationships with technical counterparts at partner sites and members of the user community
•    Participating in training activities aiming to facilitate the usage of the integrated platform by the Eastern Mediterranean user community

Terms and Hiring Process

The appointment will be for 3 years. An extension beyond the three-year period may be considered. The yearly salary range will be commensurate to the experience and qualifications of the candidate.
