Heterogenous Catalysis for Clean Energy and Green Environment

The scope of this Lecture is to present the today’s pivotal position of the heterogeneous catalysis field in the physical sciences and in particular the chemical industry. Nowadays heterogeneous catalysts, largely belonging to the nanomaterial science, are increasingly implicated in the suppression of atmospheric pollution, in the design of environmentally compatible new technologies and in the pursuit of new ways of generating clean energy and green fuels through selected chemical conversions of abundant hydrocarbons (e.g. natural gas) and small molecules such as the oxides of carbon (CO and CO2). Catalysis is a topic conducive of cross-disciplinary activity and debate.
After introducing the important and basic principles of heterogeneous catalysis, few working examples of important catalytic technological breakthroughs in the field of heterogeneous catalysis will be presented, such as the “three-way” catalytic converter for the aftertreatment of exhaust emissions from a gasoline- and diesel-driven cars, and the conversion of natural gas and biogas into synthesis gas for the production of fuels - Gas to Liquid (GTL) technology.

Prof. Angelos M. Efstathiou is the founder of the Heterogeneous Catalysis Laboratory at the University of Cyprus.
His MSc and PhD is from University of Connecticut, USA.

He published 133 peer reviewed articles in prestigious journals (ACS Catalysis, J. of Catalysis, Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, J. Phys. Chem. B and C) and he is the author of 4 Book Chapters (e.g. in “Catalysis by Ceria and Related Materials”, ICP, 2013; in “Characterization of Solid Materials and Heterogeneous Catalysts”, Wiley-VCH, 2012; in “Catalysis” vol. 28, The Royal Society of Chemistry, 201). His publications have received more than 3950 citations (h-index=38) and he is the inventor of 5 patents (US, EU, GCC) related to a novel H2-SCR of NOx technology. He has given more than 60 oral presentations and more than 30 invited talks.
He is Editor of the “Catalysis Communications” Journal (Elsevier, since June 1 2016), a Member of several Editorial Boards (e.g. Appl Catal B: Environ) and the recipient of several Awards (Royal Award for Sustainable Technology Transfer 2008 - COPENMIND; First EFCATS Young Scientists Award; First Research Award “Nikos Symeonides – 2007”, Cyprus).

He has participated in more than 25 competitive research projects as coordinator or leading partner (total over 4.0 MEuros) and he is collaborating with large international chemical companies (MEL Chemicals, UK – producer of ceria-zirconia materials; SASOL, South Africa – Production of Synthetic Fuels using Natural Gas (mostly methane) as feedstock.
