Research Infrastructures
The Cyprus Institute has pioneering, state-of-the-art research infrastructures, many of which are unique in Cyprus and the region such as CYCLONE, the largest academic open-access supercomputer in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Unmanned Systems Laboratory (USRL), the PROTEAS Solar Laboratory in Pentakomo, the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory, the "Andreas Pittas” Art Characterization Laboratory, and others. Four of our large infrastructures are included in the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) roadmap: the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO) at Agia Marina Xyliatou), the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL), the STARC facilities that are part of the Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (E-RIHS), and the PROTEAS Solar Research Facility that is part of the EU-SOLARIS and Solar Facilities for the European Research Area (SFERA).
High-Performance Computing Facility | Mobile Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science | Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory | Virtual Environments Lab |
The mission of the High Performance Computing Facility (HPCF) is to provide compute and data resources to the research community of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region, and to establish itself as the national supercomputing facility of Cyprus. HPCF houses Cyclone, the fastest open access supercomputer in the Middle East. Download Brochure (PDF) |
STARLab is a unique infrastructure consisting of a mobile Lab with state-of-the-art instrumentation for 3D digital documentation and surveying, geophysics and non-invasive, non-destructive physico-chemical analyses for the research, documentation, conservation and preservation of cultural heritage. The Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO) provides high quality, long-term continuous observations on key atmospheric pollutants relevant to air quality and climate change. CAO infrastructure is made of a network of three atmospheric monitoring stations located in three different sites in Cyprus: Agia Marina Xyliatou, Troodos, and the Cyprus Institute’s Athalassa Campus in Nicosia. It offers on-site facilities and supportive infrastructure for research, development, and testing of technologies related to atmospheric measurements. Download Brochure (PDF) |
The VELab develops efficient workflows and user-friendly digital tools to address contemporary societal challenges, such as preserving cultural heritage, promoting urban resilience and sustainable cities. Download Brochure (PDF) |
Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) | Linear Fresnel Facility (LIFE) | Solar Research Facility (PROTEAS) | Andreas Pittas Art Characterization Laboratories (APAC Labs) |
The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) offers on-site facilities and related infrastructure for research, development, and testing of technologies related to UAV’s (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). The mission of the USRL is to provide high-quality observations of atmospheric pollutants and other parameters relevant to air quality and climate change. UAV’s can carry an increasing amount of sensors and fill the gap between ground-based and satellite measurements by providing the capacity to perform long-term monitoring observations necessary for assessing climate change in our region. The mission of the Linear Fresnel (LIFE) facility is to pursue research and development of solar technologies with an emphasis on their utilization in built environment. It is located at the main CyI campus in Athalassa and it serves the cooling and heating needs of the Novel Technologies Laboratory (NTL) Building. Download Brochure (PDF) |
The mission of the PROTEAS facility is to pursue research and development of solar technologies. Located adjacent to the sea on the south coast of Cyprus near Limassol, it provides an optimal facility to develop and test in situ these technologies, optimized for island – coastal environment. The facility offers laboratories and supportive infrastructure for research, development and testing of technologies related to Concentrated Solar Power (CSP), Solar Thermal Energy (STE) and thermal Desalination of Sea Water (DSW). Andreas Pittas Art Characterization Laboratories (APAC Labs) This unique research infrastructure offers a new and innovative approach to the study and understanding of art and archeology, while contributing to the promotion and protection of cultural heritage of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. APAC Labs employ an interdisciplinary and multidimensional diagnostic approach by incorporating organic and inorganic physicochemical methods, reflective multiphase imaging and two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometric characterization of surfaces. Art and historical artefacts can be studied using advanced digital and analytical methods that have literally redefined the archaeological method and the way we protect and preserve our cultural heritage.
