Abstract

Information technologies have transformed the way we perceive our human environment. Prior to the last twenty years, information technologies were considered outside the architectural discipline, and architects experimenting with digital processes transgressed their disciplinary boundaries. With the recent proliferation of information technologies into all aspects of our lives, the knowledge of those technologies has been carried back into the architectural profession.

At this point, computational design and robotics are fully embedded into the design practice, revealing the profound impact on how architectural environments are conceived, iterated, simulated, analyzed and produced. More so, these technologies have profoundly affected our perception of our human environment, which is today a blend of natural and artificial resources, organisms and machines. “The Architecture of Potentialities” reviews the consequences of this relation between humans, nature and machines across a series of projects recently completed or under development at Aaron Sprecher’s Material Topology Research Laboratory.

About the Speaker

image 20220614 095824Aaron Sprecher is Associate Professor at the Technion Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning. He leads the Material Topology Research Laboratory at the Faculty of Architecture, and the Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) at the National Building Research Institute. In parallel, he is co-founder and partner of the award-winning practice Open Source Architecture, a collaborative research group that brings together international researchers in the fields of design, architecture, engineering, and media research.

His research and design work focus on the synergy between information technologies, computational languages, and digital fabrication systems, examining the way in which technology informs and generates innovative approaches to design processes.

Aaron Sprecher is a member of the Advisory Board of the Confluence Institute in France, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT, Montreal). He is a licensed architect in Israel, Faculty Member of the Israel National Institute of Building Research, and Member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
