The Cyprus Institute in collaboration with the Cyprus Antiquities Department and the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications in Egypt, the Fraunhofer‐Institut für Graphische Datenverarbeitung in Germany and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Italy organised an international Workshop on Digital and Cultural heritage: 3D documentation, imaging technologies and knowledge repositories.

The 3-day international workshop took place on 9 – 11 May 2012, at the premises of The Cyprus Institute and focused on advanced technologies applied to Cultural Heritage research. It examined tools and methods for digital data acquisition (photogrammetry, laser scanning and polynomial texture mapping), the use of open-source software for data post-processing, metadata standards and semantic repositories, and knowledge management. Theoretical aspects were complemented with field-work activities at archaeological sites.

Some 40 participants attended the workshop from various countries including; Egypt, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Romania, Spain and Cyprus.

The workshop was part of the training activities of the EU FP7 funded projects LinkSCEEM-2 (http://www.linksceem.eu/ls2/) and V-Must (www.v-must.net). LinkSCEEM-2 (Linking Scientific Computing in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean) aims to establish a high performance computing eco-system in the Eastern Mediterranean region, by interlinking and coordinating regional compute, storage and visualization resources to form an integrated e-infrastructure.

V-MusT (Virtual Museum Transnational Network) is a Network of Excellence, aiming to provide the heritage sector with the tools, expertise, knowledge and support for the development of virtual museums. A key activity of V-MusT is the creation of the Cyprus Virtual Museum, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities.
