Abstract

The study of the stone cutting traces is a precious source to integrated and enrich our knowledge about the Medieval buildings and their origin. The techniques and their evolution change depending on the physical characteristics of the respective types of stone and the different areas. Their study is suitable in the first place as a method to trace the progression of a medieval building site and to establish the relative chronology of the different parts of it, although in some instances absolute dating may also be possible.

Moreover, through the analysis of these traces, it is possible to establish chronological tables able to provide a relevant indication concerning the building techniques and their development in specific regions. This innovative approach enriches the traditional study of historical buildings with new information able to enhance our knowledge concerning Medieval building techniques and materials.

About The Speaker

Dr. Sc. Frans Doperé is Research Fellow Medieval Architecture and Stone Technology, KU Leuven, Faculteit Letteren, Research Group Archeology and member of numerous Scientific Committee for the Building Archaeology in France and Belgium.

He has just started a second PhD in Archaeology with the title: “Men at work” in Hellenistic and Roman Sagalassos, Technical, decorative, anthropological and chronological relevance of the registration of extraction and stone cutting techniques on antique urban masonries.
