The “Insanity” of the Beginning of the Universe, Magic by Higgs Boson

Prof. Shoji Asai, Director General, High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK)

Monday, 25 November 2024     |    Starts: 18:00
John Ioannides Auditorium, Fresnel Building, The Cyprus Institute

This public lecture is co-organised with the Embassy of Japan in Cyprus

Abstract

big bang expansion web“The universe started from nothing.”  This is how the beginning of the universe is often explained.  But how could “nothing” grow to the current universe, filled with so much matter and energy?  Our universe is called a “Big-Bang” universe, but should not the energy be conserved?  What kind of “insane” event happened at the beginning of the universe?

The discovery of Higgs boson in 2012 gave a hint to understand such questions, and our research focus changed from “particles (matter)” to “vacuum”.  Prof. Asai will talk about how the “vacuum” (filled with Higgs bosons) and “space-time” created our universe.  Our view will change from “Materialism” to “Emptyism”.

About the Speaker

Shoji AsaiShoji Asai’s research field is high energy particle physics using colliders. From 1995 to 2019 he stayed in CERN and joined LEP(OPAL) and LHC(ATLAS) projects. Using 27-km-long large colliders (LEP is an electron-positron collider and LHC is a hadron collider), he has been searching for Supersymmetric Particles, and also discovered Higgs Boson.

He has been contributing to European community for a long time, and served as a member of the European Strategy Update for the Particle Physics both in 2013 and 2020.
