PhD in Computational Sciences (Project: Controllable Droplet Transport in Heterogeneous Environments)
This project is closed
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations, cross-disciplinary research, innovation, and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centres, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.
The position offers excellent possibilities for professional development of highly motivated individuals in the framework of «RESTART 2016-2020» Programmes for Research, Technological Development and Innovation, within which the Cyprus Institute established a “Hub of Excellence” on wetting hydrodynamics in collaboration with Imperial College London and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The successful applicant will be based at the Graduate School of The Cyprus Institute and at the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC). The selected person will be enrolled in the Computational Sciences PhD program.
Description of the Position
The successful candidate will advance the CaSToRC’s research and innovation agenda by developing tools for the accurate and efficient simulation of droplets moving on heterogeneous surfaces. The outputs of this work can inform numerous applications across science and engineering whereby unravelling the wetting behaviour and the transport of droplets on surfaces plays a key role.
The specific objectives of this Ph.D. project are related in uncovering optimal transport mechanisms for droplets moving on surfaces under various levels of complexity (e.g. body forces, electric fields, evaporative effects) by:
• | developing efficient models using applied mathematical analysis |
• | producing scalable HPC algorithms and software and deploying them in simulations and parametric studies |
• | exploring the use of physics-informed machine learning methodologies in the development of data-driven models that may be used as efficient surrogates for mitigating the computing costs of fully-resolved HPC simulations |
Required Qualifications
• | MSc in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or a related field |
• | Basic knowledge of at least one high-level programming language (e.g. MATLAB, Julia, Python) |
Additional Preferred Qualifications
• | Knowledge of fluid dynamics and some experience in computational fluid dynamics |
• | Experience with High-Performance Computing, parallel and GPU programming |
• | Experience with scientific computing and simulation algorithms |
• | Experience in the application of machine learning methodologies in physical problems |
Financial Support
The successful candidate will be employed as Graduate Research Assistant or receive a stipend in accordance with the current regulations at the Graduate School. We offer competitive financial support with the exact salary / stipend level to will be confirmed upon appointment.
Application Process
Applicants should refer to the CyI website under the PhD in Computational Sciences admissions section for additional information about the application process.
Kindly note that applications should be sent through the online application system of The Cyprus Institute Graduate School. When applying through the online application, in Step 2 of the application under the section ‘Scholarship or Financial Aid’, applicants should select ‘Specific PhD Project’ and they should enter the project reference code: GS-COS-RESTART 2016-2020-22-1 in the Project Code field. Applicants should also mention in their statement of intent that they are applying for the PhD position with reference code: GS-COS-RESTART 2016-2020-22-1. If the code is not entered in the online application, the applicant may not be considered for this position.
