This project is closed
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations, cross-disciplinary research, innovation, and postgraduate education. Through its established research centers, CyI addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.
The position offers excellent possibilities for professional development of highly motivated individuals in the framework of EuroHPC, the European High-Performance Computing (HPC) Joint Undertaking, within which the Cyprus Institute is the National Center of Excellence in HPC. In this respect, The Cyprus Institute collaborates with Juelich Supercomputing Center (JSC) and the Leibniz Research Center (LRZ) for research in HPC and with Inria and the University of Wuppertal for algorithmic development.
The successful applicant will be based at the Graduate School of The Cyprus Institute and at the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC).
Description of the Position and Scientific Objectives
The successful candidate will advance CaSToRC’s research and innovation agenda in HPC by developing algorithms and software suitable for the next generation of supercomputers towards the Exascale. The objective of the PhD is to reach exascale performance in the solution of sparse linear systems. For reaching this goal, the successful candidate will:
• | gain experience in the usage of top European supercomputing systems; |
• | develop and optimize software for the latest generation of computing architecture; and |
• | implement novel algorithms for increased performance and scalability. |
This includes gaining experience with GPU programming, large-scale simulations and iterative solvers algorithms such as multigrid methods. Application and optimization of machine learning techniques is a complementary research direction.
Required Qualifications
• | MSc in Physics, Applied Mathematics or Computer Science |
• | Good knowledge of software development using programming languages such as C, C++ or Python. |
Additional Preferred Qualifications
• | Experience with High-Performance Computing, parallel and GPU programming |
• | Knowledge of simulation algorithms, iterative solvers and multigrid methods |
• | Experience in the application of machine learning to physical problems |
Financial Support
The successful candidate will be employed as Graduate Research Assistant or receive a stipend in accordance with the current regulations at the Graduate School. We offer competitive financial support with the exact salary / stipend level to be confirmed upon appointment.
