BEEP: BIM for Energy Efficiency in the Public Sector
The project is funded by ENI CBC MED under programme overreaching objective: “B.4 - Environmental protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation (Address common challenges in environment)” with Programme Priority “ B.4.3 - Support cost-effective and innovative energy rehabilitations relevant to building types and climatic zones, with a focus on public buildings”.
With the concept of energy improvement, sustainable design is becoming a tool for the protection of cultural heritage strictly connected to its conservation. Energy-environmental analysis evolved into a critical knowledge tool, for the reconstruction of the environmental and energy behaviour (both active and passive) of the historical building. The analysis planned will feature some of the procedures and techniques of the diagnostic project, deemed necessary to design different energy improvement intervention scenarios that are both compatible with the identified pilot historic buildings and capable to enhance the distinctive features and traditional technologies of the built heritage closely linked with its climate and microclimate contexts.
The workflow will be highly interdisciplinary and managed according to specific standards for interoperability and development of the Energy Efficiency Heritage Building Information Modelling (EE-HBIM) model, in the construction phase of the model and in the development of the energy refurbishment projects.
Some of the partners will use external consultants for one or more of the abovementioned phases, and during the project specific activities will be organised for knowledge transfer and capacity building among the consortium partners. The results of these analyses will feed into the EE-HBIM models that will be the basis for the development of the scenarios and further evaluations:
- Architects will use it to propose energy concepts and different sustainable conservation solutions;
- Conservation architects will use it to ensure the compatibility of designed scenarios with the international restoration charts;
- MEP engineers will integrate architectural evaluations with verifications and proposals for the valorisation of the natural behaviour of the building and the systems upgrading;
- The BIM coordinator will perform clash detection and code checking to verify the feasibility of the energy refurbishment proposed intervention.
A BIM model is not only a spatial database but also a virtual constructive simulation model that can evolve by adding new simulation rules along with the related information. To the geometric "dimensions" it is possible to add the dimension of time, costs and environmental/energy behaviour. The possibility to have an enriched EE-HBIM model that can be accessed by any professional and software compliant to ISO standards, has two main advantages: firstly the professionals can collaborate to develop the scenarios tackling any possible issue in the design phase; secondly the HBIM model can accompany the whole process of scenario implementation being kept updated and linked with the real building evolution by a BIM manager.

General objectives
- The EE-HBIM process aims to reduce the environmental impacts of the existing buildings, leading to highly efficient rehabilitation processes with the creation of new specialised and innovative jobs.
Specific objective(s)
- The BEEP project aims to foster the replicability of the methodologies and solutions suggested and developed in the crossborder case studies widespread in MED area, strengthening the cooperation among EU and MP countries, and disseminating a highly advanced AEC industry standard.
- The BEEP project aims to enhance the capacity of public local administrations to design, and realise innovative energy rehabilitation interventions on existing public buildings, by the mean of a multidisciplinary and integrated ICT tool (BIM and performance-based design: EE-HBIM approach).
- The BEEP project aims to foster the access to credit by public administration from private financial services companies (e.g. ESCOs) developing the innovative EE-HBIM approach as trusty tool for the financial evaluation of the ROI of the refurbishment project.
