MapLoS Cy - Mapping the Cult of Local Saints in Cyprus: Sites and Images (11th - 15th Century)
MapLoS Cy explores in-detail the cult of Cypriot saints through their sacred sites/monuments dedicated to them and their preserved images in the painted churches in Cyprus from the 11th to the 15th century.
The proposed project aims to:
- Study in-depth the development of the cult of local saints in Cyprus through their sites/monuments and their preserved portraits in Byzantine and medieval monumental art in the period under investigation;
- Show how the development of the cult of the local saints has had an impact on the social, economic and cultural life of the island society;
- Identify the spread of the cult of local saints in the wider eastern-Mediterranean environment;
- Visualise the cult of Cypriot saints and examine the relationship between natural and sacred space, and,
- Create management tools for promoting and preserving the cultural heritage of the island and developing the field of the Humanities and especially those of Byzantine/medieval archaeology and art.
MapLoS Cy constitutes an innovative, holistic and interdisciplinary attempt to study the phenomenon of local saints in Cyprus throughout two different periods of Cyprus’ history; the Middle Byzantine era (1096-1191) and the Lusignan Period (1192-1489), combining ‘traditional’ approaches (written sources, archaeological data, material culture, oral testimonies and local traditions) with contemporary digital techniques and tools (digitisation of heritage culture, interactive maps, application of GIS, mobile application).
