CyI Recognized for Contribution to Limassol Climate Convention’s EU Mission Label Certification
On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, in a gathering marked the celebration of the achievement of the prestigious “EU Mission Label” certification, the Limassol Climate Convention expressed gratitude to The Cyprus Institute (CyI) for its significant role in advancing the city’s sustainability goals. The event was held at Panos Solomonidis Municipal Cultural Center in Limassol.
Under the auspices of Deputy Minister to the President, Mrs. Irene Pikis, the Limassol Climate Convention Celebration brought together distinguished guests and stakeholders to recognize collective efforts in driving climate action. Limassol Mayor Mr. Nicos Nicolaides, in his remarks, emphasized CyI’s critical contribution to Limassol’s sustainable development.
Acknowledgment was extended to CyI Asst. Vice President of Innovation and Development, Dr Konstantinos Kleovoulou and CyI Adjunct Prof. Thanasis Hadzilacos, for their pivotal roles, with Mayor Nicolaides expressing sincere appreciation for their expertise and commitment. In a gesture of gratitude, the Mayor of Limassol presented the City’s Lion Award to CyI Research Scientist, Dr Nestoras Fylaktos for Energy and CyI Prof. Salvatore Carlucci for the Built Environment, recognizing their leadership in key thematic areas.
The event not only commemorated the attainment of the “EU Mission Label” certification, but also provided a platform for constructive dialogue and collaboration. Attendees engaged in discussions on leveraging this recognition to drive further innovation and foster partnerships, laying the groundwork for sustainable progress.
As the event concluded, Mayor Nicolaides expressed optimism for Limassol’s continued leadership in addressing climate change. With CyI’s support and the commitment of all stakeholders, Limassol is poised to continue its journey towards a greener, more resilient future.
During the event, Dr Kleovoulou participated in the panel discussion on the next steps of the initiative of “Limassol 2030: EU Cities Mission” with Mrs. Penelope Vasquez-Hadjilyra from the Municipality of Limassol, and Mr. Kyriakos Charalambides from Deloitte.
In November 2023, the Municipality of Limassol submitted its application to the European Commission. It was reviewed with the support of experts from, among others, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Joint Research Center (JRC) an The Cyprus Institute. After a positive evaluation, the “EU Mission Label” was awarded to the Municipality of Limassol on March 21, 2024.
