Visit by the French Ambassador of the Poles and Maritime Issues and Special Envoy of President Macron in Cyprus, Mr. Olivier Poivre d'Arvor
On Monday, 15th of January 2024, the French Ambassador of the Poles and Maritime Issues and Special Envoy of President H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron in Cyprus, H.E. Mr. Olivier Poivre d'Arvor, visited CyI’s premises in Nicosia.
This visit was conducted within the framework of preparation of the 3rd UN Ocean Conference (UNOC), which will be co-chaired by France and Costa Rica in Nice, France, in June 2025. This Conference aims to foster transformative action and provide solutions that the ocean requires, leveraging ocean science and funding for Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life below water). Furthermore, it will enable an assessment of the progress towards achieving MDG14, a decade after the Paris Agreement, and five years before the deadline of the 2030 Agenda.
Accompanying Mr. Poivre d'Arvor were the Ambassador of France in Cyprus, Mrs. Salina Grenet-Catalano, and Mr. Eric Tossati, Cooperation and Cultural Counsellor and Director of the French Institute of Cyprus.
During an initial private meeting with CyI President, Prof. Stavros Malas, and CyI Assistant Vice President of Policies and Institute Affairs, Mrs. Eleni Sophocleous, the French delegation engaged in discussions regarding CyI’s contributions in research, technological solutions, and policy recommendations related to Climate Change.
In a subsequent meeting with CyI experts on Climate Change, the French delegation received information about the Initiative of Cyprus for Coordination of Actions to Address Climate Change in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME-CCI). The delegation also discussed the preparations for the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3). The meeting was attended by CEO of CREF and Institute Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas, who led the scientific component of the EMME-CCI, in the presence of CyI Assistant Vice President of Policies and Internal Communications, Mrs. Eleni Sophocleous, CyI Prof. Fadi Comair, CARE-C Director, Prof. Jean Sciare, CyI Adjunct Prof. Thanasis Hadzilacos, and Assoc. Research Scientist, Dr Marco Neira.
