The first Solar Car Challenge was organised by The Cyprus Institute in June 2010, at the Daytona Race Track in Tseri, in collaboration with the Research Promotion Foundation. Due to its great success an annual event was born. In 2011, and for the next three years, the race was made more challenging and exciting by taking it for the first time to the open roads of Pafos and Geroskipou.

On Sunday, 22 June 2014 this popular annual summer event is coming back to Nicosia! The 2014 Solar Car Challenge is co-organized with the Nicosia Municipality. The race will begin at Stasikratous Str. and will continue towards a designated route at the city center, before heading to the Nicosia Town Hall for the award ceremony.

The aim of the race is to generate interest in science, technology and engineering amongst students and the public raising awareness of alternative and environmentally friendly, transport methods and renewable energy.

The race will be truly high-tech with the teams building their cars, designing their own engineering systems and race those same machines through the open roads of Nicosia. Unlike most race cars, solar cars are designed with energy constraints imposed by the race regulations. These rules limit the energy used to only that collected from solar radiation. These vehicles represent the green future, when driving a car will be radically different, as they have no fossil fuel engine. All horse power comes from the solar panels on the vehicles which charge the battery.  How the teams achieve this, is completely up to them. In the previous years we saw that the crews came up with some creative solutions and we look forward to see this year's designs.

Participants will be comprised of six local teams from high schools and technical schools as well as of two international solar teams, the Philadelphia University, Jordan and the NUST-PNEC University, Pakistan.
